This research was conducted for the Bachelor of History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. This work aims to put into practice everything learned regarding the subject of Paleography and Diplomatics, all this reading, analyzing, investigating and transcribing an old document.
Esta investigación fue realizada para la Licenciatura de Historia en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. El trabajo tiene como objetivo poner en práctica todo lo aprendido respecto a la materia de Paleografía y Diplomática, esto leyendo, analizando, investigando y transcribiendo un documento antiguo.
This document was chosen to analyze it due to the clash of several peculiar factors, such as the invasion of corsairs to the port of Veracruz, carried out by the pirate Laurens Cornelis Boudewijn Graaf, nicknamed the Lorencillo, who razed the port taking with him treasures and people as merchandise; the Viceroy who was in charge, the Bishop of Puebla who wrote the letter, and who curiously investigating both came to maintain relations with Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz herself.
Este documento se escogió para analizarlo debido al choque de varios factores peculiares, tales como la invasión de corsarios al puerto de Veracruz, llevada a cabo por el filibustero Laurens Cornelis Boudewijn de Graaf, apodado el Lorencillo, quien arrasó dicho puerto llevándose consigo tesoros y personas como mercancía; el Virrey que estaba a cargo, el Obispo de Puebla que escribió la carta, y que investigando, curiosamente, ambos llegaron a sostener relaciones con la mismísima Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
LAURENS DE GRAAF
On May 17, 1683 it is remembered for one of the saddest episodes of the City of Veracruz. On that occasion the pirate Laurent de Graff, known as Lorencillo, besieges the port and with 15 ships manages to seize the city thanks to the little vigilance that New Spain had in the port.They were unfortunate days where looting, rapes and murders were everyday things. As a result of these events, a fortified wall would be created by several bulwarks among which were the Santiago Bastion, (until today its construction is the only one that remains standing). Currently the other bastions and the wall no longer exist.
El 17 de mayo de 1683 es recordado por uno de los más tristes episodios de la Ciudad de Veracruz. En aquella ocasión el pirata Laurent de Graff, conocido como Lorencillo, sitia el puerto y con 15 navíos logra apoderarse de la ciudad gracias a la poca vigilancia que la Nueva España tenía en el puerto. Fueron días lamentables donde los saqueos, violaciones y asesinatos fueron cosas de todos los días.
A raíz de esos sucesos se crearía una muralla fortificada por varios baluartes entre los que estaban el Baluarte de Santiago, (hasta el día de hoy su construcción es la única que se mantiene en pie). Actualmente los demás baluartes y la muralla ya no existen.

Se comprendió el texto de la carta e investigo todo lo relacionado a esta, la cual nos alegra haberla elegido para enterarnos de estos sucesos poco mencionados usualmente.
